I've done a couple otherposts on metal and thought it was time for another. Hope you enjoy!
I saw Occultation last night at The Gutter which is what prompted the inspiration. Here's an old show of theirs.
The infamous Malibu Barbi!
Ice Age.....so good, so hard to know which video to pick. I'm choosing this for quantity of head banging.
Flammea This song is moving.
Volkana Also see this video and this video. If anyone else wants to form a band as bad ass as this, let me know and I will learn to play an instrument.
Bitchcraft Such a good band name. These are my long lost sisters.
Do you ever have one of those days where you're having a meltdown and to avoid it you start watching some show you haven't heard of on Hulu and next thing you know you've watched 6 episodes of a show that turns out to actually be an extended advertisement for pore cleasing strips and the new SUV Hyundai. Well I had one of those days recently and I'm really glad it didn't just happen again. This time I happened upon this short Diablo Cody "show thing" where she interviews other stars. In this episode of Red Band Trailer she interviews Mindy Kaling. Yo girls! Can we hang out and be friends! Its not every day that you get to hear a couple of female writers shoot the shit - nevermind shoot the shit about sperm shooting hunks vs. Rivers Cuomo.
Also other thoughts : I know its all popular and shit to hate Diablo Cody but I am really not on board with the haters. So Juno was twee and the teen had a baby but lets not throw the bathwater out with the baby.... I saw both Jennifer's Body and Young Adult in the theater and I want to support young female writers who create complex female characters. I have so many thoughts on Young Adult, I should write a post on that too. In addition, I recently listened to the audio book of Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me. I love that she rose to fame playing Ben Affleck in drag! A good guilty pleasure of a read!
This past week there were a series of speeches and a forum on feminismat The Sydney Opera House. I had a good inspiring time listening to them today. There are two talks up -one by Germaine Greer and the other by Naomi Wolf. Lets just say whoever organized the talk was not looking to shy away from controversy with those two up there.
There was also a forum discussion including Clem Bastow, Germaine Greer, Eliza Griswold and Naomi Wolf talking about 'Global Feminism and its Future'. Its an enjoyable time to see them all argue and disagree and then agree and then disagree again. I've always found Greer to be a bit ridiculous - or maybe its that I can't tell the difference between her looking to cause a stir and her actually believing what she's saying. But she got in some wonderful insights in this talk. My favorite part was this true-ism.
When you accept that a penis is a thing that can destroy you, you are accepting a phallocentric mistake. The penis is the most vulnerable part of any man. Its the only part of a man that I actually know what to do with. The rest of him is a total mystery to me. -Germaine Greer
Naomi Wolf has also long been a feminist that people love to have crap with. She definitely has her eccentricities but there is a very soft spot in my heart reserved for her. One part of the forum discussion I found interesting was when Naomi says that from her work with girls (she has a leadership institute for girls called the Woodhull Institute) she realized that its socially and culturally encouraged for girls to put themselves and other down. Its not welcomed to talk yourself up and it takes a lot of work and creating new habits and support systems to get to a place where you actually give yourself props for how smart/hard working/fabulous you are. Greer says something similar about how all her female students work too hard - they never see themselves as worthy and probably spend too much time studying and not enough time getting drunk and having fun. At least that's how she puts it.
While I think its great that feminism has moved into a place of talking about global issues and not just bullshit yuppie white lady issues, I was pretty disturbed by how much of the discussion revolved around Muslim women's issues without actually having a Muslim woman in the discussion. To hear a bunch of white women from Judeo-Christian backgrounds arguing about headscarves, genital mutilation, and Muslim views on the enlightenment was really frustrating. It made me wish they'd evened out their controversial woman forum and added Ayaan Hirsi Ali to the mix.
Unconscious and Irrational is named for the media's common presentation of girls and women as being either "out of control" or simply "passed out". In movies there aren't many female roles that won't show the girl either passing out, being knocked unconscious, or going totally crazy (usually with a car, credit car, or depressed dude).
On this blog I want to show the zillions of other things we do - whether it be music, art, comedy, or politics. I aim to provide you with a variety of gals to look up to- from Romy and Michele to Shirley Chisholm and Bella Abzug.
