Wolf Mothers, A Hindu Goddess, and Your Ideal Margiela Wardrobe

Book club time! So I had a gift certificate to a book store and I'm really burnt out on art theory and I couldn't find the new RuPaul self help book sooooo I ended up with the new bio/self help book by Kelly Cutrone. The P.R. CEO of Peoples Revolution, oftentimes depicted as Satan's mistress by MTV has recently dropped her first book "If You Have To Cry, Go Outside" at the feet of clueless twenty somethings like me.
I first got interested in Kelly Cutrone when the writers strike happened in 2008 and there was nothing on but The Hills. I did this post a while ago about how on both The Hills and The City the girls manage to go through life without ever really saying anything. Then Kelly swooped in and tore into the girls making the show more watchable. I really got into her when she started trying to get friend and ex-Warhol factory star Paul Morrisey to direct an episode of The City.

So, the book actually ended up being way more than I thought it would be. Of course there are the awesome stories about being homeless and fabulous in 1980s New York AND Los Angeles. However, she throws us some interesting actual words of wisdom when she writes about finding what actually drives you other than mindless fashion bullshit (not that you can't love that too). She talks about hindu warrior goddesses and her decision to befriend Elliot Spitzer's famed call girl Ashley Dupree (cause ya know Jesus befriended prostitutes), as well as creating lists of the best movies featuring "Power Bitches" and "Ten Things That Rule About Not Being In Your Twenties Anymore". I've actually been impressed by her parenting abilities from both the book and the new show Kell On Earth. The efforts she goes to for her daughter are a rare sight in Manhattan where everyone has an assistant to put their kid to bed and/or get him into the "right" school.
Basically, we're sitting here straddling Febuary and March, right when everyone in New York wants to die from lack of sunshine. Yet, as Kelly would say "LA has weather, New York has everything else". So if its getting too much to handle, grab a beer or some candy and curl up with this book. Or watch the first few episode of Kell On Earth on Hulu.







I was so happy that Kelly got sick of her reality TV blond assistants and replaced them with the awesome Andrew Mukamal.

Marianne Faithfull is kinda like the Meryl Streep of Rock and Roll. She's like a fine wine that collects street cred instead of dust and that most gals fantasize "oh all be just like her in my mid 60s". Except of course she's way more badass than Meryl and always has been, despite those demure looks of the 60s. Remember that time The Stones got busted for drugs and she was caught wearing only a fur rug?
Anyhow, I've been listening to her 1979 album Broken English on repeat lately and I really recommend downloading it. Here's a smattering from the ole' lass.

Oh Yea That Superbowl Thing

Ahh man, there was so much to talk about with Superbowl commercials this year. There was the whole Tim Tebow/ Focus On The Family controversy about airing anti-abortion messages during the Superbowl. And of course it seemed like 70% of the commercials involved someone getting tackled or hanging out in a hot tub -seriously even hot tubs on deserted islands. Oh and for some reason the Doritos ads had men divided into the category of either "hen pecked" husbands, black men, or hipsters Honestly watching these commercials I felt a little sorry for guys- they can be just as stereotyped as women. Personally I liked the Google commercial the best. I'm such a sap.

I actually didn't get to watch the Superbowl cause I don't have TV and I live in liberal elitist gay commie New York where no one else really watches it. However coverage of Saints linebacker Scott Fujita made me at least think about caring. Fujita, a poli-sci major from Berkeley is a big supporter of gay rights, abortion rights, breast cancer awareness, and hopes to be a public school teacher when he retires from football. Now there's a guy who could sell me some Doritos.

Anne Truitt

Artist Anne Truitt (1921-2004) was way ahead of the game. Associated with minimalist and color field artists like Morris Lewis and Kenneth Noland, and making work that anticipated the works of Donald Judd and Ellsworth Kelly, Anne was a force of her time in many respects. Yet, while reading two of her published journals/autobiographies, Turn and Daybook, I was struck by how different she was in many ways from that era of masculine sculpture. Her books intricately interweave a wonderful life and personality of conflicting hard and soft edges.

Anne was born into an upper middle class Baltimore family and was the third generation of well educated women in her family. She attended Bryn Mawr, majored in psychology, and worked for a short time as a nurse. There is something so different in this generation of women, the formal and proper nature of her writing was strikingly different from any other autobiography I've read. Yet, the effort it took for a woman to carve out her own place in that world was unique and I think it took a certain type of woman to be so self avowed as to make a go at it. Another interesting dichotomy was her relationship to this minimal "masculine" practice of art yet through a decidedly unashamed feminine perspective. She compares looking at a newly finished sculpture to seeing her children for the first time - looking at something you've created and recognizing it because its been in you for quite some time. Anne "spends time" with her works - really grooving (though she would never use that word) on the colors of the sun setting in her studio.... drawing inspiration from nature and light. She runs out of money at one point and is using her old baby changing table for a drawing table. And yet she is hard as nails at the same time- Clement Greenberg said that her piece Hardcastle "scared the shit out of him". Anne was also showing at the Whitney, getting Guggenheim Fellowships, and heading up the Yaddo residency for a while. Greenberg called her one of the DC Three with Kenneth Noland and Morris Lewis.

Anne believed that color could have psychological vibrations, and the purification of color, as on a piece of art, isolated the experience of the color to a thing instead of an experience. This experienced turned art object way of working said so much about her desire to order and control her surroundings while not giving up her emotional and natural connection to the world around her. Anne Truitt has been getting a late yet very deserved second wave of appreciation with a show at the Hirshhorn Museum in DC and a great write up by Anne Wagner in Artforum. Though she seems to be a bit shoved out of art history texts I think that if she were included we would have an illuminated and more nuanced view of the gendered and contained rules to minimalist art.

So obviously I then fell into an all night k-hole of you-tubing and came out with the images and videos below. Sam did a post on women of metal a while ago, so here's my version. It's based 50/50 on ability to rock and ability to accessorize really well.

Hey did you guys know that White Zombie was originally a noise rock band that met at Pratt Institute?
